Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Industrials and Technology sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 2.63% or 6.23 points to trade at 242.76 at the close. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) added 2.05% or 3.72 points to end at 185.00 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 1.48% or 1.40 points to 95.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.17% or 0.36 points to trade at 30.42 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 0.85% or 0.84 points to end at 98.22 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 0.78% or 3.58 points to 458.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which rose 7.42% to 114.72, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which was up 5.49% to settle at 67.02 and MarketAxess Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MKTX) which gained 4.86% to close at 205.97.
The worst performers were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 4.56% to 77.83 in late trade, Hubbell Inc (NYSE:HUBB) which lost 4.11% to settle at 365.94 and Eaton Corporation PLC (NYSE:ETN) which was down 4.02% to 313.46 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Virax Biolabs Group Ltd (NASDAQ:VRAX) which rose 85.85% to 1.97, SilverSun Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:QXO) which was up 68.61% to settle at 220.00 and Fibrobiologics Inc (NASDAQ:FBLG) which gained 53.88% to close at 10.31.
The worst performers were Cue Health Inc (OTC:HLTHQ) which was down 79.95% to 0.01 in late trade, Plutonian Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:PLTN) which lost 58.10% to settle at 2.43 and Actelis Networks Inc (NASDAQ:ASNS) which was down 47.04% to 1.97 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1543 to 1290 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2008 fell and 1316 advanced, while 169 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.40% to 12.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.69% or 16.50 to $2,392.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 2.01% or 1.49 to hit $75.56 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.87% or 1.47 to trade at $79.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.29% to 155.65.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 104.07.
