Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.37% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV), which rose 9.00% or 21.87 points to trade at 264.82 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.66% or 2.47 points to end at 151.20 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 1.46% or 4.10 points to 285.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which lost 0.95% or 0.67 points to trade at 69.90 in late trade. Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) declined 0.93% or 5.31 points to end at 566.03 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 0.72% or 3.01 points to 415.60.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Snap-On Inc (NYSE:SNA) which rose 9.97% to 327.79, Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) which was up 9.00% to settle at 264.82 and Blackstone Inc (NYSE:BX) which gained 6.27% to close at 169.73.
The worst performers were Molina Healthcare Inc (NYSE:MOH) which was down 12.55% to 289.46 in late trade, Elevance Health Inc (NYSE:ELV) which lost 10.33% to settle at 445.63 and Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was down 9.09% to 63.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nuzee Inc (NASDAQ:NUZE) which rose 546.07% to 2.30, Molecular Templates Inc (NASDAQ:MTEM) which was up 186.15% to settle at 0.93 and NKGen Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:NKGN) which gained 154.08% to close at 0.70.
The worst performers were Alpine 4 Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ALPP) which was down 42.07% to 0.20 in late trade, 180 Life Sciences Corp (NASDAQ:ATNF) which lost 33.08% to settle at 4.33 and Firefly Neuroscience Inc (NASDAQ:AIFF) which was down 30.73% to 2.84 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1498 to 1294 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1782 fell and 1513 advanced, while 137 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.40% to 19.11.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.59% or 16.00 to $2,707.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.48% or 0.34 to hit $70.73 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.36% or 0.27 to trade at $74.49 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.39% to 150.20.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 103.61.
