Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.24% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 3.98% or 9.57 points to trade at 249.94 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 2.68% or 3.79 points to end at 145.04 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.79% or 5.88 points to 216.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.38% or 1.20 points to trade at 49.18 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 1.61% or 3.82 points to end at 233.39 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 1.51% or 2.04 points to 133.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which rose 8.78% to 73.56, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was up 8.50% to settle at 22.35 and Cboe Global Markets Inc (NYSE:CBOE) which gained 7.81% to close at 96.38.
The worst performers were TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was down 21.00% to 8.14 in late trade, Allegion PLC (NYSE:ALLE) which lost 7.16% to settle at 109.79 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 5.99% to 40.46 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Socket Mobile Inc (NASDAQ:SCKT) which rose 724.07% to 26.700, Pyxis Tankers Inc (NASDAQ:PXS) which was up 120.26% to settle at 3.370 and Luokung Technology Corp (NASDAQ:LKCO) which gained 83.65% to close at 2.920.
The worst performers were Cortexyme Inc (NASDAQ:CRTX) which was down 36.15% to 30.31 in late trade, Bluebird bio Inc (NASDAQ:BLUE) which lost 35.97% to settle at 29.30 and Ehang Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EH) which was down 32.96% to 83.19 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1569 to 1557 and 56 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1761 rose and 1431 declined, while 58 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.81% to 21.13.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.52% or 27.70 to $1795.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.19% or 0.71 to hit $60.18 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.22% or 0.14 to trade at $63.44 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.10% to 1.2115, while USD/JPY rose 0.52% to 105.91.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 90.507.
