Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.51%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.93%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 4.33% or 7.96 points to trade at 191.98 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 2.70% or 6.74 points to end at 256.52 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 2.46% or 8.26 points to 344.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON), which lost 5.24% or 11.20 points to trade at 202.45 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 2.45% or 10.50 points to end at 418.40 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.89% or 0.60 points to 31.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ServiceNow Inc (NYSE:NOW) which rose 13.40% to 828.79, Molina Healthcare Inc (NYSE:MOH) which was up 12.28% to settle at 324.17 and Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which gained 10.23% to close at 204.99.
The worst performers were Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was down 31.34% to 59.70 in late trade, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) which lost 18.36% to settle at 11.16 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which was down 14.40% to 277.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Predictive Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:POAI) which rose 74.77% to 1.87, Salarius Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SLRX) which was up 63.55% to settle at 3.50 and EzFill Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EZFL) which gained 61.04% to close at 4.01.
The worst performers were 2U Inc (NASDAQ:TWOU) which was down 63.35% to 1.51 in late trade, Expion360 Inc (NASDAQ:XPON) which lost 47.02% to settle at 0.55 and Kindly MD Inc (NASDAQ:KDLY) which was down 39.38% to 1.97 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1806 to 1020 and 86 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2037 rose and 1317 declined, while 105 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.33% to 18.46 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 2.22% or 53.70 to $2,362.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.75% or 0.58 to hit $78.17 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.72% or 0.59 to trade at $82.30 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 153.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 104.15.
