Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Industrials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.35% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.60% or 4.13 points to trade at 262.63 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 1.12% or 1.34 points to end at 121.46 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.07% or 2.62 points to 246.88 in late trade.
Biggest losers included DowDuPont Inc (NYSE:DWDP), which lost 1.75% or 1.28 points to trade at 72.04 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.61% or 2.67 points to end at 162.71 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 1.18% or 0.41 points to 34.21.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ANSYS Inc (NASDAQ:ANSS) which rose 9.65% to 148.68, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was up 8.00% to settle at 47.10 and Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BDX) which gained 7.67% to close at 224.02.
The worst performers were Flowserve Corporation (NYSE:FLS) which was down 11.03% to 39.14 in late trade, Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:DISCK) which lost 10.12% to settle at 16.26 and Discovery Communications Inc (NASDAQ:DISCA) which was down 9.66% to 17.31 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocera Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OCRX) which rose 68.63% to 1.720, Payment Data Systems Inc (NASDAQ:PYDS) which was up 40.25% to settle at 3.380 and Aralez Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ARLZ) which gained 33.79% to close at 1.94.
The worst performers were Cartesian I (NASDAQ:CRTN) which was down 37.92% to 0.280 in late trade, Impinj Inc (NASDAQ:PI) which lost 34.30% to settle at 21.55 and OraSure Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OSUR) which was down 27.66% to 13.76 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1573 to 1536 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1414 rose and 1109 declined, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.75% to 9.92.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.04% or 0.46 to $1276.84 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.87% or 0.47 to hit $54.77 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.55% or 0.33 to trade at $60.82 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.34% to 1.1659, while USD/JPY fell 0.07% to 114.09.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 94.61.
