Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.11%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 1.22% or 0.38 points to trade at 31.49 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 1.11% or 1.82 points to end at 166.28 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.89% or 0.87 points to 98.09 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 1.24% or 0.67 points to trade at 53.54 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.00% or 0.30 points to end at 29.78 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 0.63% or 0.83 points to 131.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CSRA Inc (NYSE:CSRA) which rose 6.16% to 25.86, Marriot International (NASDAQ:MAR) which was up 3.93% to settle at 71.34 and Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which gained 3.65% to close at 31.84.
The worst performers were Noble Energy Inc (NYSE:NBL) which was down 8.17% to 29.69 in late trade, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which lost 4.59% to settle at 28.27 and Tesoro Corporation (NYSE:TSO) which was down 2.68% to 90.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Alder Bioph (NASDAQ:ALDR) which rose 49.59% to 25.70, Synthesis Energy Systems Inc (NASDAQ:SYMX) which was up 41.34% to settle at 1.2000 and Code Rebel Corp (NASDAQ:CDRB) which gained 40.24% to close at 4.60.
The worst performers were Apricus Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:APRI) which was down 47.19% to 0.713 in late trade, Quantum Fuel Systems Inc (NASDAQ:QTWW) which lost 36.71% to settle at 0.0950 and Tecogen Inc (NASDAQ:TGEN) which was down 22.83% to 4.53 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1873 to 1483 and 32 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1443 fell and 1130 advanced, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.12% to 15.20.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.16% or 2.00 to $1221.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.05% or 0.02 to hit $39.44 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.37% or 0.15 to trade at $40.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.28% to 1.1197, while USD/JPY rose 0.27% to 113.43.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.20% at 95.98.
