Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.56%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.09%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.29% or 1.42 points to trade at 111.11 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 0.95% or 3.08 points to end at 327.07 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.74% or 0.72 points to 98.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 8.27% or 13.25 points to trade at 147.00 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.98% or 10.85 points to end at 536.91 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.73% or 3.10 points to 175.78.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which rose 9.44% to 73.52, Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which was up 5.53% to settle at 139.39 and Synopsys Inc (NASDAQ:SNPS) which gained 5.39% to close at 357.84.
The worst performers were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was down 8.27% to 147.00 in late trade, Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which lost 7.56% to settle at 236.34 and Baxter International Inc (NYSE:BAX) which was down 6.86% to 52.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Neonode Inc (NASDAQ:NEON) which rose 44.63% to 5.93, Vivakor Inc (NASDAQ:VIVK) which was up 37.60% to settle at 1.83 and ConforMIS Inc (NASDAQ:CFMS) which gained 35.00% to close at 3.78.
The worst performers were Yunhong CTI Ltd (NASDAQ:CTIB) which was down 54.20% to 0.38 in late trade, G-III Apparel Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GIII) which lost 44.66% to settle at 11.97 and Aziyo Biologics Inc (NASDAQ:AZYO) which was down 40.58% to 4.10 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1693 to 1419 and 137 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1981 rose and 1736 declined, while 267 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.50% to 19.86 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 3.24% or 57.00 to $1,816.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.03% or 0.83 to hit $81.38 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.03% or 0.03 to trade at $87.00 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.13% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 1.95% to 135.35.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.14% at 104.68.
