Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.22%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.76%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which rose 3.14% or 4.24 points to trade at 139.31 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 2.75% or 2.11 points to end at 78.85 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 2.32% or 5.22 points to 230.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 5.60% or 31.66 points to trade at 533.53 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.74% or 2.59 points to end at 146.64 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 1.53% or 4.61 points to 296.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) which rose 6.63% to 183.20, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 5.93% to settle at 424.77 and EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which gained 5.88% to close at 45.58.
The worst performers were CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 6.15% to 51.76 in late trade, Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) which lost 5.82% to settle at 61.18 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) which was down 5.60% to 533.53 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sealsq Corp (NASDAQ:LAES) which rose 101.40% to 1.15, Amplitech Group Inc (NASDAQ:AMPG) which was up 93.53% to settle at 1.92 and Candel Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CADL) which gained 68.11% to close at 7.75.
The worst performers were Samfine Creation Holdings Group Ltd (NASDAQ:SFHG) which was down 85.54% to 3.05 in late trade, Cellectar Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CLRB) which lost 76.16% to settle at 0.31 and Q32 Bio Inc (NASDAQ:QTTB) which was down 75.62% to 5.95 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1511 to 1277 and 97 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1670 fell and 1651 advanced, while 112 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.23% to 13.58.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.29% or 34.96 to $2,753.36 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.48% or 1.70 to hit $70.29 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.86% or 1.34 to trade at $73.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 1.05, while USD/JPY rose 0.38% to 152.52.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 106.35.
