Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.13% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 4.86% or 6.68 points to trade at 144.18 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.58% or 3.44 points to end at 136.80 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.13% or 3.41 points to 163.26 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 4.57% or 7.10 points to trade at 148.38 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 1.93% or 2.33 points to end at 118.29 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 1.82% or 5.19 points to 279.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which rose 10.12% to 11.43, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was up 9.71% to settle at 9.60 and Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which gained 8.94% to close at 184.75.
The worst performers were Diamondback Energy Inc (NASDAQ:FANG) which was down 8.52% to 122.29 in late trade, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) which lost 8.47% to settle at 93.74 and Devon Energy Corporation (NYSE:DVN) which was down 8.30% to 58.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Mereo BioPharma Group PLC ADR (NASDAQ:MREO) which rose 62.50% to 1.30, SoundHound AI Inc (NASDAQ:SOUN) which was up 49.81% to settle at 4.00 and Swvl Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SWVL) which gained 35.29% to close at 6.90.
The worst performers were Addex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ADXN) which was down 55.16% to 1.50 in late trade, Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which lost 51.48% to settle at 1.48 and Advent Technologies Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ADN) which was down 27.57% to 2.89 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1872 to 1320 and 126 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2648 rose and 1187 declined, while 210 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.52% to 31.13.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.47% or 8.70 to $1,841.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 6.53% or 7.68 to hit $109.91 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 5.50% or 6.59 to trade at $113.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.47% to 1.05, while USD/JPY rose 2.08% to 134.96.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.97% at 104.43.
