Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.61%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which rose 1.90% or 0.95 points to trade at 50.91 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 1.72% or 3.65 points to end at 215.63 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was up 1.61% or 3.77 points to 237.79 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 2.12% or 3.59 points to trade at 166.13 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 1.61% or 0.84 points to end at 51.35 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.34% or 0.79 points to 57.74.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which rose 9.79% to 35.10, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 5.92% to settle at 864.33 and F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which gained 5.48% to close at 189.97.
The worst performers were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:WDC) which was down 5.02% to 51.99 in late trade, Alliance Data Systems Corp (NYSE:ADS) which lost 4.90% to settle at 74.48 and Avery Dennison Corp (NYSE:AVY) which was down 4.06% to 156.37 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were LM Funding America Inc (NASDAQ:LMFA) which rose 160.11% to 2.0000, Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which was up 85.21% to settle at 10.52 and Polarityte Inc (NASDAQ:PTE) which gained 64.34% to close at 1.26.
The worst performers were Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SRPT) which was down 51.22% to 82.41 in late trade, The9 Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:NCTY) which lost 25.73% to settle at 12.700 and Castor Maritime Inc (NASDAQ:CTRM) which was down 21.78% to 0.187 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1713 to 1355 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1693 fell and 1352 advanced, while 63 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.37% to 21.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 3.59% or 68.75 to $1844.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 3.11% or 1.58 to hit $52.41 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 3.07% or 1.67 to trade at $56.05 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.43% to 1.2217, while USD/JPY rose 0.14% to 103.94.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.30% at 90.062.
