Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Industrials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecommunications and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.92% or 1.76 points to trade at 93.62 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.90% or 0.77 points to end at 86.26 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.89% or 0.70 points to 79.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which lost 2.19% or 2.04 points to trade at 91.01 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 1.74% or 1.96 points to end at 110.44 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.35% or 0.47 points to 34.27.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE:BSX) which rose 12.40% to 16.68, Tesoro Corporation (NYSE:TSO) which was up 4.60% to settle at 87.09 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which gained 3.76% to close at 25.92.
The worst performers were Fossil Group Inc (NASDAQ:FOSL) which was down 15.74% to 83.69 in late trade, Garmin Ltd (NASDAQ:GRMN) which lost 10.74% to settle at 50.71 and Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which was down 9.07% to 8.02 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Capnia Inc (NASDAQ:CAPN) which rose 145.27% to 5.96, Angies List Inc (NASDAQ:ANGI) which was up 58.90% to settle at 7.77 and Eagle Pharm (NASDAQ:EGRX) which gained 40.80% to close at 36.75.
The worst performers were Rosetta Genomics Ltd (NASDAQ:ROSG) which was down 20.83% to 3.800 in late trade, Astea International Inc (NASDAQ:ATEA) which lost 19.54% to settle at 1.400 and CollabRx Inc (NASDAQ:CLRX) which was down 19.13% to 1.140 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1607 to 1184 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1419 rose and 1355 declined, while 8 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.15% to 15.46.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.19% or 2.30 to $1210.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 3.54% or 1.92 to hit $52.37 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 3.78% or 2.37 to trade at $60.16 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.07% to 1.1403, while USD/JPY fell 0.49% to 118.67.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.02% at 94.12.
