Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.71%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.57% or 0.23 points to trade at 40.52 at the close. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) added 0.54% or 0.83 points to end at 154.50 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.32% or 0.14 points to 41.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 3.14% or 2.42 points to trade at 74.65 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.89% or 1.51 points to end at 78.46 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) shed 1.76% or 4.73 points to 264.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which rose 4.19% to 98.30, Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was up 3.78% to settle at 131.21 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which gained 3.55% to close at 467.80.
The worst performers were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which was down 3.47% to 91.60 in late trade, EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) which lost 3.14% to settle at 74.65 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 3.09% to 17.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Black Diamond Inc (NASDAQ:BDE) which rose 36.74% to 9.64, Capricor Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CAPR) which was up 31.91% to settle at 9.3000 and Esperion Th (NASDAQ:ESPR) which gained 29.18% to close at 99.60.
The worst performers were Reading International B Inc (NASDAQ:RDIB) which was down 22.00% to 12.480 in late trade, Amarin Corporation PLC (NASDAQ:AMRN) which lost 16.84% to settle at 2.37 and Torchlight Energ (NASDAQ:TRCH) which was down 15.79% to 0.32 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1505 to 1305 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1454 rose and 1335 declined, while 9 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.38% to 15.67.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.42% or 4.80 to $1148.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in May fell 2.63% or 1.22 to hit $44.91 a barrel, while the May Brent Oil contract fell 0.88% or 0.47 to trade at $53.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.20% to 1.0589, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 121.37.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 100.03.
