Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Services and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Financials, Technology and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.11% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 1.72% or 0.50 points to trade at 29.55 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.49% or 1.54 points to end at 104.98 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 1.26% or 1.41 points to 113.35 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which lost 0.87% or 0.42 points to trade at 48.30 in late trade. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) declined 0.73% or 1.08 points to end at 146.88 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 0.66% or 0.53 points to 80.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PEPCO Holdings Inc (NYSE:POM) which rose 8.83% to 27.00, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (NASDAQ:BBBY) which was up 5.31% to settle at 73.35 and Macy`s Inc (NYSE:M) which gained 5.24% to close at 66.53.
The worst performers were Keurig Green Mountain Inc (NASDAQ:GMCR) which was down 8.55% to 94.26 in late trade, Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ:SYMC) which lost 5.48% to settle at 24.48 and Navient Cor (NASDAQ:NAVI) which was down 3.38% to 19.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MagneGas Corporation (NASDAQ:MNGA) which rose 59.34% to 1.450, BSQUARE Corporation (NASDAQ:BSQR) which was up 34.47% to settle at 5.500 and Interphase Corporation (NASDAQ:INPH) which gained 21.98% to close at 0.61.
The worst performers were Joes Jeans Inc (NASDAQ:JOEZ) which was down 28.18% to 0.110 in late trade, Local Corporation (NASDAQ:LOCM) which lost 27.29% to settle at 0.400 and RMG Networks Holding Corp (NASDAQ:RMGN) which was down 26.90% to 1.060 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1732 to 1396 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1450 fell and 1340 advanced, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.83% to 12.38.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.07% or 0.90 to $1224.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.02% or 0.01 to hit $59.87 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.32% or 0.21 to trade at $66.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.31% to 1.1444, while USD/JPY rose 0.16% to 119.35.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.09% at 93.32.
