Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Financials, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.08%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.50%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 6.83% or 16.53 points to trade at 258.66 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 4.95% or 6.80 points to end at 144.08 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 4.25% or 5.06 points to 124.14 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.99% or 1.42 points to trade at 46.04 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 2.03% or 2.55 points to end at 123.30 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 1.77% or 0.95 points to 52.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) which rose 6.83% to 258.66, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) which was up 5.81% to settle at 67.91 and Apartment Investment and Management Co (NYSE:AIV) which gained 5.42% to close at 4.76.
The worst performers were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which was down 5.29% to 17.54 in late trade, SL Green Realty Corp (NYSE:SLG) which lost 4.37% to settle at 55.57 and Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which was down 4.30% to 58.52 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Big Rock Partners Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BRPA) which rose 145.31% to 37.41, NantKwest Inc (NASDAQ:NK) which was up 60.53% to settle at 16.47 and Anterix Inc (NASDAQ:ATEX) which gained 54.97% to close at 45.67.
The worst performers were Sesen Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SESN) which was down 22.13% to 1.3550 in late trade, Cyren Ltd (NASDAQ:CYRN) which lost 20.00% to settle at 1.200 and Uniqure NV (NASDAQ:QURE) which was down 18.26% to 37.56 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2075 to 1022 and 78 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1709 fell and 1285 advanced, while 71 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 16.50% to 25.13 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.40% or 7.60 to $1881.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.92% or 1.44 to hit $47.80 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.87% or 1.50 to trade at $50.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.10% to 1.2243, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 103.36.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 89.987.
