Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.05%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.69% or 0.96 points to trade at 57.99 at the close. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) added 1.07% or 1.42 points to end at 134.42 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.97% or 0.98 points to 102.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.37% or 2.19 points to trade at 90.32 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.01% or 0.73 points to end at 71.70 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.00% or 0.30 points to 29.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON) which rose 8.39% to 97.92, CA Inc (NASDAQ:CA) which was up 5.07% to settle at 31.48 and Ralph Lauren Corporation (NYSE:RL) which gained 2.87% to close at 86.88.
The worst performers were Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which was down 9.17% to 35.15 in late trade, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which lost 5.46% to settle at 27.85 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 5.00% to 11.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cnova NV (NASDAQ:CNV) which rose 47.94% to 5.03, Crossroads Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CRDS) which was up 31.58% to settle at 0.2500 and Draftday Fantasy Sports Inc (NASDAQ:DDAY) which gained 30.86% to close at 0.4253.
The worst performers were Linn Co LLC (NASDAQ:LNCO) which was down 59.08% to 0.1408 in late trade, Linn Energy LLC (NASDAQ:LINE) which lost 57.72% to settle at 0.14 and KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which was down 50.28% to 0.1442 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1763 to 1547 and 30 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1749 fell and 818 advanced, while 64 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.25% to 14.36.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.56% or 7.15 to $1268.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.48% or 0.22 to hit $46.45 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.74% or 0.35 to trade at $47.95 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.44% to 1.1376, while USD/JPY rose 0.58% to 109.04.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.35% at 94.13.
