Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.62%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.42%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.97% or 3.81 points to trade at 132.04 at the close. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 1.93% or 4.38 points to end at 230.85 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.37% or 0.82 points to 223.41 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 3.59% or 1.46 points to trade at 39.21 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 2.88% or 6.55 points to end at 220.76 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 2.35% or 6.03 points to 250.95.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which rose 7.07% to 7.27, Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) which was up 4.54% to settle at 152.58 and Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which gained 3.82% to close at 147.44.
The worst performers were CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which was down 7.98% to 92.44 in late trade, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which lost 6.25% to settle at 23.23 and Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which was down 5.32% to 21.91 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocugen, Inc (NASDAQ:OCGN) which rose 153.40% to 0.7450, Foresight Autonomous Holdings Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:FRSX) which was up 67.61% to settle at 2.950 and Microvision Inc (NASDAQ:MVIS) which gained 57.37% to close at 9.0800.
The worst performers were Soligenix Inc (NASDAQ:SNGX) which was down 50.04% to 1.369 in late trade, China Customer Relations Centers Inc (NASDAQ:CCRC) which lost 45.02% to settle at 3.42 and Venus Concept Inc (NASDAQ:VERO) which was down 24.02% to 1.93 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1796 to 1278 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1620 rose and 1386 declined, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.06% to 24.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.88% or 16.55 to $1866.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 2.25% or 1.08 to hit $46.89 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 1.89% or 0.96 to trade at $49.95 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.71% to 1.2154, while USD/JPY rose 0.39% to 103.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.72% at 90.600.
