Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.28%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.02%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which rose 4.89% or 6.86 points to trade at 147.01 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 3.00% or 2.52 points to end at 86.60 and Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) was up 1.44% or 2.91 points to 204.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 2.15% or 12.65 points to trade at 577.00 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.51% or 1.97 points to end at 128.20 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.31% or 0.98 points to 73.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which rose 31.34% to 28.29, Vistra Energy Corp (NYSE:VST) which was up 5.61% to settle at 154.85 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which gained 4.89% to close at 147.01.
The worst performers were Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which was down 8.33% to 70.56 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 5.62% to settle at 37.29 and Intuit Inc (NASDAQ:INTU) which was down 5.10% to 644.17 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) which rose 161.68% to 1.40, noco noco Inc (NASDAQ:NCNC) which was up 67.01% to settle at 0.16 and Next Technology Holding Inc (NASDAQ:NXTT) which gained 61.76% to close at 2.75.
The worst performers were Silence Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SLN) which was down 36.75% to 6.97 in late trade, Akari Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:AKTX) which lost 31.44% to settle at 1.57 and QMMM Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:QMMM) which was down 26.59% to 1.27 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1424 to 1388 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1783 rose and 1484 declined, while 159 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.94% to 16.35.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.85% or 22.20 to $2,636.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.20% or 0.14 to hit $69.31 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.08% or 0.06 to trade at $73.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.03% to 1.06, while USD/JPY rose 0.02% to 154.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 106.12.
