Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Industrials, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.64%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 22.94% or 23.72 points to trade at 127.11 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 2.41% or 6.19 points to end at 262.71 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 2.39% or 5.74 points to 245.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 0.47% or 0.59 points to trade at 125.26 in late trade. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 0.33% or 0.23 points to end at 69.79 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.12% or 0.23 points to 191.75.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which rose 22.94% to 127.11, Mohawk Industries Inc (NYSE:MHK) which was up 19.49% to settle at 160.71 and Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:CHTR) which gained 16.63% to close at 367.66.
The worst performers were DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was down 40.67% to 63.99 in late trade, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which lost 7.14% to settle at 211.19 and L3Harris Technologies Inc (NYSE:LHX) which was down 5.70% to 229.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Windtree Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:WINT) which rose 151.98% to 8.29, Burgerfi International Inc (NASDAQ:BFI) which was up 97.33% to settle at 0.42 and Planet Image International Ltd (NASDAQ:YIBO) which gained 53.42% to close at 2.91.
The worst performers were Nature’s Miracle Holding Inc (NASDAQ:NMHI) which was down 47.73% to 0.20 in late trade, Tantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:TANH) which lost 47.23% to settle at 0.26 and DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was down 40.67% to 63.99 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2271 to 554 and 97 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2321 rose and 1016 declined, while 131 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 11.21% to 16.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.38% or 32.40 to $2,385.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.03% or 1.59 to hit $76.69 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.95% or 1.61 to trade at $80.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.11% to 153.76.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 104.05.
