Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Oil & Gas and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 1.75% or 2.31 points to trade at 134.46 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.25% or 1.09 points to end at 88.64 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.92% or 0.96 points to 105.75 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 2.60% or 5.95 points to trade at 223.31 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.12% or 1.72 points to end at 152.17 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 0.92% or 0.99 points to 107.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which rose 13.54% to 183.60, First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was up 3.04% to settle at 44.02 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which gained 2.85% to close at 133.55.
The worst performers were Harley-Davidson Inc (NYSE:HOG) which was down 5.87% to 48.95 in late trade, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which lost 4.34% to settle at 374.98 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 4.11% to 5.84 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Capricor Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CAPR) which rose 102.99% to 1.3600, Novavax Inc (NASDAQ:NVAX) which was up 27.19% to settle at 1.450 and Moleculin Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:MBRX) which gained 20.59% to close at 2.05.
The worst performers were Tile Shop Hldgs Inc (NASDAQ:TTS) which was down 25.93% to 15.000 in late trade, Crossroads Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CRDS) which lost 25.25% to settle at 2.2200 and ShiftPixy Inc (NASDAQ:PIXY) which was down 20.94% to 7.74 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1621 to 1467 and 162 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1433 fell and 1036 advanced, while 162 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.32% to 9.95.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.62% or 7.62 to $1241.32 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.91% or 0.42 to hit $46.44 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.93% or 0.45 to trade at $48.87 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.67% to 1.1555, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 112.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.51% at 94.44.
