Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.77%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.25%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 4.31% or 9.99 points to trade at 241.80 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.13% or 3.27 points to end at 156.60 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 1.98% or 3.37 points to 173.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which lost 2.18% or 1.21 points to trade at 54.23 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.15% or 4.61 points to end at 209.68 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) shed 0.72% or 0.45 points to 62.18.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) which rose 8.46% to 68.49, Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) which was up 7.29% to settle at 306.16 and EPAM Systems Inc (NYSE:EPAM) which gained 6.78% to close at 181.80.
The worst performers were Jabil Circuit Inc (NYSE:JBL) which was down 11.44% to 111.79 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 8.77% to settle at 108.57 and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) which was down 6.22% to 3,214.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Bluejay Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ:BJDX) which rose 818.76% to 3.37, Griid Infrastructure Inc (NASDAQ:GRDI) which was up 98.21% to settle at 1.11 and Zapp Electric Vehicles Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ZAPP) which gained 73.53% to close at 2.36.
The worst performers were Kaival Brands Innovations Group Inc (NASDAQ:KAVL) which was down 36.22% to 2.87 in late trade, Mustang Bio Inc (NASDAQ:MBIO) which lost 34.07% to settle at 0.56 and Sonnet Biotherapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SONN) which was down 32.03% to 1.04 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1426 to 1419 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1893 fell and 1450 advanced, while 153 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.97% to 13.28.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.10% or 25.70 to $2,372.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.78% or 0.63 to hit $81.34 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.78% or 0.66 to trade at $85.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.36% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.53% to 158.91.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 105.30.
