Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.68% or 0.48 points to trade at 29.08 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.12% or 0.78 points to end at 70.40 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 1.19% or 1.73 points to 146.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.17% or 1.65 points to trade at 74.45 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.75% or 1.97 points to end at 110.37 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.76% or 0.71 points to 92.64.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which rose 5.95% to 5.52, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which was up 4.14% to settle at 89.28 and Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which gained 3.38% to close at 43.15.
The worst performers were Joy Global Inc (NYSE:JOY) which was down 14.60% to 18.90 in late trade, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which lost 4.15% to settle at 101.06 and Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 2.47% to 47.42 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:KBIO) which rose 48.53% to 3.030, Pericom Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEM) which was up 37.68% to settle at 16.77 and Liquid Hlgs (NASDAQ:LIQD) which gained 33.33% to close at 0.140.
The worst performers were Wave Systems Corp (NASDAQ:WAVX) which was down 27.08% to 0.175 in late trade, Sfx Enterta (NASDAQ:SFXE) which lost 25.37% to settle at 0.50 and Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was down 18.17% to 0.17 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1634 to 911 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1294 fell and 1276 advanced, while 33 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.30% to 25.49.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.78% or 8.80 to $1124.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.30% or 0.60 to hit $46.85 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.50% or 0.25 to trade at $50.75 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.86% to 1.1130, while USD/JPY fell 0.32% to 119.94.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.47% at 96.34.
