Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Technology and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.70%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.20% or 0.73 points to trade at 23.54 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 1.35% or 3.65 points to end at 274.09 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.90% or 0.73 points to 81.40 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 5.46% or 18.06 points to trade at 312.86 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.36% or 3.48 points to end at 143.97 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 2.30% or 3.59 points to 152.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which rose 5.14% to 19.85, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was up 3.68% to settle at 262.81 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) which gained 3.20% to close at 23.54.
The worst performers were Global Payments Inc (NYSE:GPN) which was down 6.50% to 97.06 in late trade, Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) which lost 5.46% to settle at 312.86 and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was down 4.87% to 45.73 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Transcode Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RNAZ) which rose 55.58% to 0.65, Rezolve AI Ltd (NASDAQ:RZLV) which was up 52.85% to settle at 7.52 and Alpha Technology Group Ltd (NASDAQ:ATGL) which gained 46.26% to close at 2.15.
The worst performers were Vertex Energy Inc (NASDAQ:VTNR) which was down 58.45% to 0.15 in late trade, Creative Media & Community Trust Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCT) which lost 54.87% to settle at 0.69 and Stitch Fix (NASDAQ:SFIX) which was down 39.47% to 2.27 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1991 to 804 and 96 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2240 fell and 1052 advanced, while 124 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.13% to 15.41.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.17% or 4.60 to $2,681.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.49% or 1.78 to hit $69.78 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.97% or 1.47 to trade at $73.00 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.48% to 1.11, while USD/JPY rose 1.12% to 144.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.52% at 100.68.
