Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.66%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.57% or 0.36 points to trade at 63.86 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 0.50% or 1.00 points to end at 201.84 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.37% or 0.57 points to 153.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 8.73% or 8.83 points to trade at 92.31 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.70% or 1.11 points to end at 28.86 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.08% or 1.11 points to 52.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were STERIS plc (NYSE:STE) which rose 9.85% to 208.04, Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which was up 8.27% to settle at 40.21 and Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which gained 5.07% to close at 195.75.
The worst performers were First Republic Bank (OTC:FRCB) which was down 9.96% to 0.42 in late trade, Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) which lost 8.73% to settle at 92.31 and SVB Financial Group (OTC:SIVBQ) which was down 7.39% to 0.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sunshine Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SBFM) which rose 78.11% to 0.90, Polar Power Inc (NASDAQ:POLA) which was up 42.31% to settle at 1.48 and Heart Test Laboratories Inc Unit (NASDAQ:HSCS) which gained 37.77% to close at 1.20.
The worst performers were Immunitybio Inc (NASDAQ:IBRX) which was down 55.14% to 2.79 in late trade, Neptune Wellness Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:NEPT) which lost 45.68% to settle at 0.22 and Dynatronics Corporation (NASDAQ:DYNT) which was down 39.02% to 0.87 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2024 to 917 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2236 fell and 1313 advanced, while 168 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.06% to 16.93.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.84% or 17.15 to $2,019.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.56% or 1.13 to hit $71.43 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.22% or 0.93 to trade at $75.48 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.59% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.16% to 134.55.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.62% at 101.89.
