Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Goods and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Industrials, Financials and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.29%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 6.72% or 2.66 points to trade at 42.24 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 4.13% or 6.11 points to end at 153.97 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 1.39% or 0.67 points to 48.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 10.93% or 11.81 points to trade at 96.21 in late trade. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) declined 1.67% or 2.71 points to end at 159.76 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 1.65% or 5.88 points to 350.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) which rose 6.72% to 42.24, Rtx Corp (NYSE:RTX) which was up 5.35% to settle at 89.57 and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which gained 5.31% to close at 40.49.
The worst performers were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which was down 10.93% to 96.21 in late trade, DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which lost 9.27% to settle at 143.08 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which was down 8.28% to 15.95 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Rail Vision Ltd Unit (NASDAQ:RVSN) which rose 195.56% to 6.65, FaZe Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:FAZE) which was up 107.12% to settle at 0.32 and Nuvve Holding Corp (NASDAQ:NVVE) which gained 85.23% to close at 5.52.
The worst performers were Vroom (NASDAQ:VRM) which was down 42.38% to 0.30 in late trade, Nutex Health Inc (NASDAQ:NUTX) which lost 26.17% to settle at 0.14 and Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which was down 23.14% to 0.93 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1454 to 1392 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1761 fell and 1656 advanced, while 126 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.85% to 12.55.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.38% or 7.65 to $2,029.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.39% or 0.29 to hit $74.47 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.46% or 0.37 to trade at $79.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.17% to 148.34.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 103.34.
