Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 2.85% or 2.58 points to trade at 93.02 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 1.53% or 2.06 points to end at 136.97 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.13% or 1.38 points to 123.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.59% or 0.98 points to trade at 60.48 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.27% or 4.39 points to end at 340.02 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.03% or 1.31 points to 125.48.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which rose 9.95% to 21.32, Apache Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 9.59% to settle at 16.46 and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which gained 8.34% to close at 51.17.
The worst performers were Martin Marietta Materials Inc (NYSE:MLM) which was down 4.38% to 265.04 in late trade, CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which lost 3.92% to settle at 10.04 and BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 3.79% to 38.35 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Immutep Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:IMMP) which rose 183.33% to 6.120, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which was up 158.22% to settle at 16.50 and Veru Inc (NASDAQ:VERU) which gained 58.61% to close at 6.17.
The worst performers were ZW Data Action Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:CNET) which was down 31.53% to 1.390 in late trade, Oncternal Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ONCT) which lost 26.43% to settle at 4.63 and GeoVax Labs Inc (NASDAQ:GOVX) which was down 25.48% to 4.2700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1601 to 1458 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1765 rose and 1211 declined, while 79 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.18% to 22.31.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.05% or 1.00 to $1839.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 3.05% or 1.39 to hit $46.91 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 3.11% or 1.52 to trade at $50.38 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.51% to 1.2143, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 104.19.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 90.763.
