Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 5.16% or 4.06 points to trade at 82.75 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 3.10% or 3.24 points to end at 107.89 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) was up 1.44% or 1.91 points to 134.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which lost 4.47% or 5.69 points to trade at 121.71 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 1.90% or 1.06 points to end at 54.81 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 1.51% or 0.69 points to 44.88.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Linear Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:LLTC) which rose 28.93% to 62.49, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ:TXN) which was up 7.85% to settle at 71.42 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which gained 6.22% to close at 103.47.
The worst performers were Centene Corporation (NYSE:CNC) which was down 8.49% to 68.87 in late trade, Gilead Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:GILD) which lost 8.47% to settle at 81.05 and Tegna Inc (NYSE:TGNA) which was down 8.00% to 23.0000 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Alimera Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:ALIM) which rose 59.43% to 1.690, Bind Therap (NASDAQ:BIND) which was up 44.41% to settle at 0.930 and Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KOOL) which gained 44.06% to close at 4.9700.
The worst performers were Tokai Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:TKAI) which was down 78.85% to 1.10 in late trade, Cardiome Pharma Corp (NASDAQ:CRME) which lost 43.21% to settle at 3.010 and SkyPeople Fruit Juice Inc (NASDAQ:SPU) which was down 28.59% to 13.0100 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1974 to 1295 and 30 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1561 rose and 994 declined, while 86 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.40% to 13.05.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.04% or 0.50 to $1327.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.02% or 0.44 to hit $42.69 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $44.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.00% to 1.0985, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 104.70.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 97.17.
