Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (N:UNH), which rose 1.39% or 1.59 points to trade at 116.23 at the close. Visa Inc (N:V) added 1.16% or 0.91 points to end at 79.26 and Nike Inc (N:NKE) was up 1.15% or 1.50 points to 131.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (N:CVX), which lost 2.29% or 2.22 points to trade at 94.55 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) declined 1.36% or 1.17 points to end at 84.81 and International Business Machines (N:IBM) shed 1.23% or 1.74 points to 139.89.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ralph Lauren Corporation (N:RL) which rose 14.91% to 130.50, Autodesk Inc (O:ADSK) which was up 9.79% to settle at 63.49 and Martin Marietta Materials Inc (N:MLM) which gained 6.50% to close at 155.33.
The worst performers were Qualcomm Incorporated (O:QCOM) which was down 15.25% to 51.07 in late trade, Endo International PLC (O:ENDP) which lost 14.53% to settle at 51.70 and Teradata Corporation (N:TDC) which was down 14.13% to 25.58 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were InfoSonics Corp (O:IFON) which rose 61.16% to 1.950, EyeGate Pharmaceuticals Inc (O:EYEG) which was up 57.47% to settle at 4.11 and Lantheus Holdings Inc (O:LNTH) which gained 28.40% to close at 4.25.
The worst performers were EnerNOC Inc (O:ENOC) which was down 38.62% to 4.99 in late trade, EnteroMedics Inc (O:ETRM) which lost 34.24% to settle at 0.191 and Intersect ENT Inc (O:XENT) which was down 23.74% to 16.54 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1343 to 1193 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1333 fell and 1167 advanced, while 53 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.84% to 15.07.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.19% or 2.10 to $1104.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.07% or 0.96 to hit $45.36 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.95% or 0.46 to trade at $48.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.14% to 1.0879, while USD/JPY rose 0.16% to 121.75.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.10% at 98.10.
