Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials, Healthcare and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.07% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.17%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.71% or 2.66 points to trade at 100.68 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) added 1.80% or 1.26 points to end at 71.25 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 1.48% or 1.19 points to 81.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 4.37% or 3.49 points to trade at 76.43 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 1.74% or 1.99 points to end at 112.34 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.53% or 1.63 points to 105.02.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:TJX) which rose 2.87% to 69.19, Endo Health Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was up 2.80% to settle at 83.03 and McDonald`s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) which gained 2.71% to close at 100.68.
The worst performers were Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which was down 15.00% to 34.61 in late trade, Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ:YHOO) which lost 7.51% to settle at 41.03 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 5.86% to 18.97 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Prima BioMed Ltd (NASDAQ:PBMD) which rose 207.75% to 1.600, Giga-tronics Incorporated (NASDAQ:GIGA) which was up 28.64% to settle at 2.740 and Acorn Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ACFN) which gained 27.06% to close at 0.610.
The worst performers were Vertex Energy Inc (NASDAQ:VTNR) which was down 24.32% to 2.520 in late trade, FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) which lost 21.50% to settle at 0.083 and Marron Bio (NASDAQ:MBII) which was down 20.27% to 2.36 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1867 to 1264 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1580 fell and 1219 advanced, while 7 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.02% to 12.86.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.65% or 20.20 to $1207.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 3.58% or 2.15 to hit $58.09 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 3.15% or 2.09 to trade at $64.18 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.47% to 1.1149, while USD/JPY rose 0.59% to 120.70.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.21% at 95.37.
