Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Basic Materials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Healthcare and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.09%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.29% or 0.75 points to trade at 58.73 at the close. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 1.25% or 1.17 points to end at 95.09 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 0.86% or 0.92 points to 107.84 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 2.79% or 2.10 points to trade at 73.23 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.10% or 1.40 points to end at 125.77 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) shed 0.75% or 0.99 points to 131.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which rose 6.56% to 29.72, Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was up 5.31% to settle at 23.80 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which gained 5.21% to close at 12.52.
The worst performers were Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was down 7.05% to 21.08 in late trade, Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which lost 6.32% to settle at 21.21 and Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which was down 6.29% to 54.23 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Caredx Inc (NASDAQ:CDNA) which rose 25.00% to 1.600, Hawaiian Telcom Holdco Inc (NASDAQ:HCOM) which was up 18.13% to settle at 28.87 and Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:KOOL) which gained 16.92% to close at 3.8000.
The worst performers were Inotek Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:ITEK) which was down 44.92% to 0.95 in late trade, Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which lost 21.88% to settle at 0.50 and Zion Oil & Gas Inc (NASDAQ:ZN) which was down 20.75% to 4.660 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1588 to 1524 and 134 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1532 fell and 936 advanced, while 140 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.63% to 11.12.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.33% or 3.98 to $1213.68 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.50% or 0.22 to hit $44.45 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.45% or 0.21 to trade at $46.92 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1400, while USD/JPY rose 0.15% to 114.08.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 95.81.
