Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.19%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.11%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.91%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 0.88% or 1.51 points to trade at 172.51 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.82% or 1.06 points to end at 129.57 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 0.74% or 0.20 points to 27.24 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.44% or 0.43 points to trade at 29.47 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 1.41% or 1.33 points to end at 93.15 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 1.11% or 1.65 points to 146.84.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) which rose 16.26% to 699.62, Google Inc C (NASDAQ:GOOG) which was up 16.05% to settle at 672.93 and CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which gained 9.85% to close at 68.92.
The worst performers were Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 7.73% to 13.48 in late trade, Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which lost 6.69% to settle at 43.12 and Ensco PLC (NYSE:ESV) which was down 6.35% to 19.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Etsy Inc (NASDAQ:ETSY) which rose 30.60% to 21.98, TESSCO Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ:TESS) which was up 26.00% to settle at 25.10 and Voltari Corp (NASDAQ:VLTC) which gained 22.88% to close at 9.830.
The worst performers were Liquid Hlgs (NASDAQ:LIQD) which was down 19.95% to 0.120 in late trade, Nephrogenex (NASDAQ:NRX) which lost 17.19% to settle at 4.72 and Discovery Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:DSCO) which was down 15.30% to 0.52 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2200 to 892 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1690 fell and 1128 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.16% to 11.97 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.94% or 10.80 to $1133.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.21% or 0.10 to hit $50.80 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.28% or 0.16 to trade at $57.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.41% to 1.0832, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 124.08.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.33% at 98.09.
