Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.59% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.00%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.65% or 0.52 points to trade at 20.13 at the close. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 1.91% or 5.13 points to end at 274.32 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.46% or 3.30 points to 229.79 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 0.91% or 3.38 points to trade at 367.06 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 0.73% or 1.89 points to end at 257.01 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.58% or 0.24 points to 41.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 14.11% to 100.18, Cooper Companies Inc (NASDAQ:COO) which was up 11.84% to settle at 105.73 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which gained 5.77% to close at 314.79.
The worst performers were Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was down 32.15% to 84.03 in late trade, Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which lost 10.26% to settle at 84.77 and NetApp Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP) which was down 9.64% to 119.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were XORTX Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:XRTX) which rose 130.77% to 2.70, Biocardia Inc (NASDAQ:BCDA) which was up 82.73% to settle at 4.02 and Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which gained 53.78% to close at 5.09.
The worst performers were iLearningEngines Inc (NASDAQ:AILE) which was down 53.29% to 1.49 in late trade, Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which lost 34.67% to settle at 0.41 and Portage Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:PRTG) which was down 32.03% to 4.52 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1928 to 880 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1974 rose and 1284 declined, while 157 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.53% to 15.65.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.66% or 16.80 to $2,554.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.88% or 1.40 to hit $75.92 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.68% or 1.30 to trade at $78.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.39% to 1.11, while USD/JPY rose 0.27% to 144.96.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 101.31.
