Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Industrials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.22%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.07%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which rose 2.00% or 10.27 points to trade at 524.52 at the close. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) added 1.36% or 0.83 points to end at 61.67 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) was up 1.33% or 1.76 points to 134.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which lost 2.71% or 3.96 points to trade at 142.27 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 1.46% or 1.63 points to end at 109.76 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 1.16% or 1.17 points to 99.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) which rose 9.81% to 69.37, Boston Scientific Corp (NYSE:BSX) which was up 4.30% to settle at 95.95 and CarMax Inc (NYSE:KMX) which gained 3.55% to close at 81.93.
The worst performers were Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which was down 10.18% to 69.50 in late trade, Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which lost 9.17% to settle at 43.17 and ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) which was down 7.05% to 58.31 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were JX Luxventure Ltd (NASDAQ:JXG) which rose 222.03% to 3.80, CURRENC Group Inc (NASDAQ:CURR) which was up 182.01% to settle at 3.92 and Sana Biotechnology Inc (NASDAQ:SANA) which gained 160.61% to close at 4.30.
The worst performers were DatChat Inc (NASDAQ:DATS) which was down 64.05% to 3.21 in late trade, Jasper Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:JSPR) which lost 60.53% to settle at 6.99 and XTI Aerospace Inc (NASDAQ:XTIA) which was down 55.74% to 0.05 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1539 to 1225 and 95 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2322 fell and 999 advanced, while 90 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.67% to 17.70.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.53% or 14.07 to $2,679.47 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 1.27% or 0.94 to hit $73.31 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.13% or 0.87 to trade at $76.18 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.03, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 158.42.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 108.87.
