Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.09%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.31%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV), which rose 1.56% or 3.55 points to trade at 231.42 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 1.41% or 2.83 points to end at 204.11 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.37% or 2.20 points to 163.22 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 3.38% or 1.45 points to trade at 41.48 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.33% or 0.67 points to end at 19.43 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.79% or 2.59 points to 142.07.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 4.18% to 219.41, Mondelez International Inc (NASDAQ:MDLZ) which was up 4.17% to settle at 75.26 and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which gained 4.08% to close at 100.73.
The worst performers were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which was down 22.16% to 63.56 in late trade, Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which lost 8.69% to settle at 73.26 and Molina Healthcare Inc (NYSE:MOH) which was down 6.96% to 331.24 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were WiSA Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:WISA) which rose 125.00% to 3.06, Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc (NASDAQ:FFIE) which was up 52.77% to settle at 5.24 and 180 Life Sciences Corp (NASDAQ:ATNF) which gained 41.24% to close at 2.50.
The worst performers were Athira Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:ATHA) which was down 78.43% to 0.61 in late trade, BAIYU Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BYU) which lost 73.02% to settle at 1.50 and Psyence Biomedical Ltd (NASDAQ:PBM) which was down 34.99% to 0.23 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1445 to 1379 and 88 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1845 fell and 1469 advanced, while 131 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.90% to 21.32.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.12% or 3.10 to $2,526.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 2.10% or 1.48 to hit $68.86 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 1.83% or 1.35 to trade at $72.40 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.35% to 1.11, while USD/JPY fell 1.17% to 143.77.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.52% at 101.24.
