Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.00%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.42% or 1.77 points to trade at 126.35 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 1.06% or 1.16 points to end at 110.09 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was up 0.87% or 2.47 points to 285.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 2.09% or 2.79 points to trade at 130.48 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 1.38% or 1.97 points to end at 140.94 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 1.08% or 1.93 points to 176.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were State Street Corp (NYSE:STT) which rose 8.19% to 80.45, Campbell Soup Company (NYSE:CPB) which was up 6.02% to settle at 56.18 and Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK) which gained 4.13% to close at 44.61.
The worst performers were M&T Bank Corp (NYSE:MTB) which was down 7.72% to 147.97 in late trade, Brown Forman (NYSE:BFb) which lost 7.30% to settle at 68.27 and Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 6.32% to 90.79 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Prometheus Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RXDX) which rose 165.67% to 95.80, Transcode Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RNAZ) which was up 133.44% to settle at 0.98 and Vor Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:VOR) which gained 41.86% to close at 6.10.
The worst performers were Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which was down 53.36% to 1.04 in late trade, Versus Systems Inc (NASDAQ:VS) which lost 46.98% to settle at 0.79 and Bruush Oral Care Inc Unit (NASDAQ:BRSH) which was down 46.95% to 0.50 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1623 to 1453 and 134 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2190 fell and 1495 advanced, while 212 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.30% to 22.68.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.91% or 16.25 to $1,798.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 2.38% or 1.77 to hit $72.48 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.27% or 1.80 to trade at $77.55 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.39% to 136.51.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 105.12.
