Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), which rose 2.36% or 4.14 points to trade at 179.54 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.15% or 0.92 points to end at 43.65 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 2.09% or 8.47 points to 414.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 5.19% or 11.25 points to trade at 205.57 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 4.39% or 21.44 points to end at 467.13 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 2.19% or 5.50 points to 245.42.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) which rose 11.44% to 155.89, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) which was up 5.26% to settle at 148.23 and Digital Realty Trust Inc (NYSE:DLR) which gained 4.97% to close at 156.76.
The worst performers were Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which was down 8.52% to 16.10 in late trade, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which lost 5.44% to settle at 44.82 and Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which was down 5.36% to 65.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sirius XM Holding Inc (NASDAQ:SIRI) which rose 925.47% to 27.38, Quhuo Ltd (NASDAQ:QH) which was up 315.77% to settle at 1.36 and iLearningEngines Inc (NASDAQ:AILE) which gained 115.17% to close at 1.56.
The worst performers were Edgio Inc (NASDAQ:EGIO) which was down 38.36% to 0.75 in late trade, Painreform Ltd (NASDAQ:PRFX) which lost 33.33% to settle at 1.06 and Singularity Future Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:SGLY) which was down 32.16% to 1.73 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1439 to 1355 and 108 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1668 rose and 1599 declined, while 154 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.90% to 19.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.50% or 12.75 to $2,545.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 3.46% or 2.38 to hit $66.33 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 2.99% or 2.15 to trade at $69.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.10% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.55% to 142.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 101.61.
