Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Healthcare and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.16%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.13%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.42% or 2.00 points to trade at 143.25 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 0.75% or 0.64 points to end at 86.17 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.65% or 0.52 points to 79.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.87% or 0.64 points to trade at 33.27 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 1.76% or 2.11 points to end at 117.75 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 0.84% or 0.51 points to 60.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which rose 7.08% to 112.09, Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which was up 6.71% to settle at 30.52 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which gained 5.74% to close at 20.46.
The worst performers were Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE:IRM) which was down 5.84% to 34.68 in late trade, Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which lost 2.57% to settle at 43.21 and CenterPoint Energy Inc (NYSE:CNP) which was down 2.42% to 19.73 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Torchlight Energ (NASDAQ:TRCH) which rose 49.08% to 1.640, Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was up 26.45% to settle at 3.920 and Clean Diesel Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:CDTI) which gained 22.93% to close at 2.52.
The worst performers were Dex Media Inc (NASDAQ:DXM) which was down 19.89% to 0.91 in late trade, American Caresource Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ANCI) which lost 19.62% to settle at 2.090 and Regulus Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RGLS) which was down 16.33% to 11.530 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1856 to 1276 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1617 rose and 1170 declined, while 2 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.93% to 14.24.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.42% or 5.00 to $1193.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.59% or 0.95 to hit $61.16 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.99% or 0.65 to trade at $65.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 2.02% to 1.1148, while USD/JPY fell 0.55% to 124.10.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.57% at 96.00.
