Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.29% or 1.94 points to trade at 152.20 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) added 0.81% or 0.82 points to end at 102.14 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 0.80% or 0.46 points to 58.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.54% or 1.51 points to trade at 57.92 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 1.88% or 0.61 points to end at 31.89 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.13% or 1.09 points to 95.24.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 19.68% to 4.50, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was up 6.91% to settle at 31.11 and Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which gained 5.24% to close at 34.97.
The worst performers were Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was down 8.02% to 26.03 in late trade, National Oilwell Varco Inc (NYSE:NOV) which lost 6.15% to settle at 27.32 and Under Armour Inc (NYSE:UA) which was down 5.49% to 41.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:EGLE) which rose 44.60% to 0.911, Globus Maritime Ltd (NASDAQ:GLBS) which was up 38.18% to settle at 0.3800 and Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:UEPS) which gained 30.50% to close at 11.68.
The worst performers were Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc (NASDAQ:OMEX) which was down 58.78% to 3.4500 in late trade, Insys Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:INSY) which lost 19.37% to settle at 14.24 and Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was down 18.39% to 3.1500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1955 to 1370 and 33 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1348 fell and 1237 advanced, while 55 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.60% to 16.22.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 1.14% or 14.20 to $1258.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.66% or 0.66 to hit $40.38 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 2.10% or 0.88 to trade at $42.82 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1407, while USD/JPY fell 0.12% to 107.97.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.25% at 93.98.
