Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Financials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.05% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 1.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.24%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 3.53% or 2.98 points to trade at 87.50 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 2.93% or 6.36 points to end at 223.22 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 2.64% or 2.49 points to 96.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 0.68% or 0.38 points to trade at 55.47 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.65% or 0.74 points to end at 113.70 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.42% or 0.20 points to 47.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CR Bard Inc (NYSE:BCR) which rose 19.50% to 302.41, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was up 5.90% to settle at 101.70 and Xilinx Inc (NASDAQ:XLNX) which gained 5.13% to close at 60.65.
The worst performers were Becton Dickinson and Company (NYSE:BDX) which was down 4.44% to 177.07 in late trade, Regency Centers Corporation (NYSE:REG) which lost 3.31% to settle at 65.24 and GGP Inc (NYSE:GGP) which was down 3.26% to 22.55 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Spi Energy Co Ltd (NASDAQ:SPI) which rose 63.46% to 0.85, PhaseRx Inc (NASDAQ:PZRX) which was up 54.03% to settle at 1.91 and Ocean Power Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:OPTT) which gained 49.73% to close at 2.740.
The worst performers were TOP SHIPS Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 25.72% to 0.3922 in late trade, Torchlight Energ (NASDAQ:TRCH) which lost 23.40% to settle at 1.4400 and Immune Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IMNP) which was down 20.96% to 2.7900 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2197 to 1020 and 35 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1793 rose and 722 declined, while 104 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 25.02% to 10.97 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.93% or 11.97 to $1277.13 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.85% or 0.42 to hit $49.20 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.72% or 0.38 to trade at $52.06 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.29% to 1.0866, while USD/JPY rose 0.55% to 109.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.75% at 98.91.
