Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.90%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.99%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.36%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 1.95% or 2.22 points to trade at 115.82 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.92% or 0.59 points to end at 31.27 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.73% or 4.07 points to 239.75 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 0.77% or 0.27 points to trade at 34.65 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 0.18% or 0.08 points to end at 45.60 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 0.08% or 0.07 points to 92.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which rose 4.94% to 25.69, Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) which was up 4.56% to settle at 20.42 and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:VRTX) which gained 4.34% to close at 155.48.
The worst performers were Coty Inc (NYSE:COTY) which was down 9.41% to 17.71 in late trade, Frontier Communications Corp (NASDAQ:FTR) which lost 5.35% to settle at 12.04 and Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) which was down 2.11% to 81.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were root9B Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RTNB) which rose 136.51% to 2.9800, Kirklands Inc (NASDAQ:KIRK) which was up 31.03% to settle at 10.98 and Ovid Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OVID) which gained 24.43% to close at 8.25.
The worst performers were Baozun Inc (NASDAQ:BZUN) which was down 24.19% to 26.23 in late trade, Tarena Intl Adr (NASDAQ:TEDU) which lost 24.18% to settle at 14.11 and Momo Inc (NASDAQ:MOMO) which was down 20.10% to 36.02 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2204 to 897 and 139 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1723 rose and 731 declined, while 168 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 12.51% to 11.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.46% or 6.02 to $1290.68 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.72% or 0.34 to hit $47.87 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.48% or 0.25 to trade at $51.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.45% to 1.1763, while USD/JPY rose 0.55% to 109.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 93.42.
