Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.30%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 1.64% or 0.96 points to trade at 59.62 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 1.14% or 0.35 points to end at 30.98 and EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) was up 0.70% or 0.49 points to 70.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 0.99% or 0.72 points to trade at 71.98 in late trade. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) declined 0.68% or 0.92 points to end at 134.07 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) shed 0.44% or 0.48 points to 108.02.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 19.51% to 39.20, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was up 5.91% to settle at 6.450 and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which gained 5.05% to close at 16.43.
The worst performers were JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which was down 8.06% to 143.63 in late trade, Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which lost 4.76% to settle at 45.62 and KLA-Tencor Corporation (NASDAQ:KLAC) which was down 3.50% to 68.05 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which rose 36.36% to 0.4500, Tetralogic Phrm (NASDAQ:TLOG) which was up 28.86% to settle at 0.2384 and Clovis Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:CLVS) which gained 27.24% to close at 23.03.
The worst performers were Xtera Communications Inc (NASDAQ:XCOM) which was down 49.48% to 0.354 in late trade, Sophiris Bio Inc (NASDAQ:SPHS) which lost 33.16% to settle at 3.890 and Biostar Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:BSPM) which was down 29.31% to 2.8700 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2118 to 1033 and 107 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1597 rose and 896 declined, while 112 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.22% to 12.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.05% or 0.65 to $1342.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.18% or 0.56 to hit $47.97 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.30% or 0.64 to trade at $49.80 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.10% to 1.1309, while USD/JPY fell 0.11% to 100.22.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.04% at 94.48.
