Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Services, Financials and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.03%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.13%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 2.87% or 0.80 points to trade at 28.70 at the close. Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) added 1.67% or 2.38 points to end at 144.81 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.44% or 1.52 points to 106.95 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 2.00% or 0.59 points to trade at 28.87 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 1.47% or 1.16 points to end at 77.76 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.08% or 0.94 points to 85.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) which rose 8.95% to 187.40, News Corp A (NASDAQ:NWSA) which was up 7.58% to settle at 15.19 and Monster Beverage 1990 Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which gained 4.86% to close at 149.06.
The worst performers were CONSOL Energy Inc (NYSE:CNX) which was down 8.80% to 12.95 in late trade, Kohl`s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which lost 8.76% to settle at 56.11 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 6.51% to 14.07 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Swisher Hygiene Inc (NASDAQ:SWSH) which rose 117.37% to 1.300, Capnia Inc (NASDAQ:CAPN) which was up 93.37% to settle at 3.15 and xG Technology Inc (NASDAQ:XGTI) which gained 38.99% to close at 2.210.
The worst performers were BG Medicine Inc (NASDAQ:BGMD) which was down 37.23% to 0.929 in late trade, Immune Desi (NASDAQ:IMDZ) which lost 20.17% to settle at 15.16 and 6D Global Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SIXD) which was down 18.41% to 4.30 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1447 to 1019 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1433 fell and 1131 advanced, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.96% to 13.48.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.83% or 9.30 to $1114.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.39% or 1.03 to hit $42.27 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.08% or 0.54 to trade at $49.64 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.00% to 1.1158, while USD/JPY rose 0.18% to 124.42.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.09% at 96.36.
