Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.31%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.18%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 1.64% or 1.09 points to trade at 67.42 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.76% or 1.58 points to end at 210.45 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) was up 0.68% or 0.58 points to 86.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.81% or 0.87 points to trade at 47.23 in late trade. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) declined 1.47% or 1.09 points to end at 73.06 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.45% or 0.47 points to 31.84.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Under Armour Inc (NYSE:UA) which rose 4.87% to 81.84, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which was up 4.01% to settle at 539.40 and Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ:ZION) which gained 3.41% to close at 31.84.
The worst performers were Altria Group (NYSE:MO) which was down 3.35% to 48.21 in late trade, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which lost 3.32% to settle at 25.91 and Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE:TAP) which was down 3.01% to 72.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores (NASDAQ:SHOS) which rose 26.06% to 8.90, RealNetworks Inc (NASDAQ:RNWK) which was up 19.22% to settle at 7.07 and Innocoll AG (NASDAQ:INNL) which gained 18.40% to close at 14.80.
The worst performers were Lightbridge Corporation (NASDAQ:LTBR) which was down 21.51% to 1.350 in late trade, Zumiez Inc (NASDAQ:ZUMZ) which lost 19.30% to settle at 24.00 and Atossa Genetics Inc (NASDAQ:ATOS) which was down 13.38% to 1.360 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1661 to 1464 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1848 rose and 930 declined, while 3 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.20% to 14.24.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.36% or 4.20 to $1171.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.57% or 0.91 to hit $58.91 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.87% or 1.16 to trade at $63.19 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.12% to 1.1113, while USD/JPY rose 0.99% to 125.59.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.95% at 96.39.
