Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Health Care, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.53%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.42%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 1.75% or 1.46 points to trade at 84.67 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) added 0.75% or 0.82 points to end at 110.43 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 0.49% or 0.12 points to 24.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.63% or 1.42 points to trade at 85.91 in late trade. McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.35% or 1.27 points to end at 92.72 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 1.33% or 1.43 points to 105.77.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which rose 10.43% to 20.44, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was up 7.03% to settle at 59.66 and Noble Corporation PLC (NYSE:NE) which gained 5.99% to close at 19.28.
The worst performers were Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) which was down 5.55% to 15.65 in late trade, PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which lost 4.97% to settle at 103.19 and Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE:EW) which was down 3.42% to 128.08 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ivanhoe Energy Inc (NASDAQ:IVAN) which rose 66.68% to 0.683, PostRock Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:PSTR) which was up 44.44% to settle at 5.850 and Quantum Fuel Systems Inc (NASDAQ:QTWW) which gained 36.20% to close at 3.800.
The worst performers were Speed Commerce Inc (NASDAQ:SPDC) which was down 46.06% to 1.30 in late trade, Corinthian Colleges Inc (NASDAQ:COCO) which lost 26.09% to settle at 0.037 and Changyoucom Limited (NASDAQ:CYOU) which was down 17.29% to 24.16 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1814 to 986; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1751 fell and 1042 advanced, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.35% to 18.56.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.39% or 4.80 to $1239.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in March rose 1.90% or 0.98 to hit $52.67 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract rose 0.68% or 0.40 to trade at $59.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.08% to 1.1324, while USD/JPY fell 0.42% to 118.61.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.16% at 94.69.
