Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.12%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.26%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.62%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which rose 0.70% or 0.29 points to trade at 41.96 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) added 0.67% or 0.75 points to end at 112.50 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 0.52% or 0.66 points to 127.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 1.13% or 0.81 points to trade at 70.93 in late trade. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) declined 0.92% or 0.53 points to end at 57.16 and E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) shed 0.87% or 0.69 points to 78.54.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Albemarle Corporation (NYSE:ALB) which rose 9.79% to 101.51, Priceline.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:PCLN) which was up 5.64% to settle at 1724.13 and Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) which gained 3.53% to close at 46.97.
The worst performers were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 12.75% to 63.59 in late trade, Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) which lost 12.17% to settle at 58.77 and Perrigo Co (NYSE:PRGO) which was down 11.70% to 74.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Kite Pharma (NASDAQ:KITE) which rose 24.34% to 70.66, Prima BioMed Ltd (NASDAQ:PBMD) which was up 22.59% to settle at 2.9300 and Crispr Therapeutics AG (NASDAQ:CRSP) which gained 18.95% to close at 23.73.
The worst performers were Essendant Inc (NASDAQ:ESND) which was down 27.89% to 15.93 in late trade, Atlantic Alliance Partnership Corp (NASDAQ:AAPC) which lost 25.11% to settle at 14.20 and Fiesta Restaurant Group Inc (NASDAQ:FRGI) which was down 23.51% to 19.850 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2086 to 1147 and 32 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2010 fell and 537 advanced, while 83 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.78% to 12.91 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.76% or 9.60 to $1249.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.20% or 0.11 to hit $53.94 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.09% or 0.05 to trade at $56.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.09% to 1.0576, while USD/JPY rose 0.16% to 112.88.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 101.34.
