Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.34% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.36%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.55%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 4.99% or 9.61 points to trade at 202.24 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 4.44% or 3.25 points to end at 76.50 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 4.37% or 1.41 points to 33.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG), which lost 3.86% or 3.32 points to trade at 82.61 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 3.21% or 1.35 points to end at 40.91 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 2.53% or 1.21 points to 46.65.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Kohl’s Corporation (NYSE:KSS) which rose 10.79% to 50.63, CSRA Inc (NYSE:CSRA) which was up 8.98% to settle at 29.85 and Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which gained 7.83% to close at 17.55.
The worst performers were ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which was down 8.71% to 33.98 in late trade, NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which lost 7.73% to settle at 11.10 and Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was down 6.56% to 34.61 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which rose 163.92% to 13.4600, TubeMogul Inc (NASDAQ:TUBE) which was up 81.66% to settle at 13.93 and StemCells Inc (NASDAQ:STEM) which gained 48.07% to close at 1.1994.
The worst performers were CPI Card Group Inc (NASDAQ:PMTS) which was down 31.19% to 3.48 in late trade, Anthera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ANTH) which lost 30.40% to settle at 1.935 and Avid Technology Inc (NASDAQ:AVID) which was down 29.19% to 4.47 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1648 to 1557 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1643 rose and 883 declined, while 69 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.81% to 14.64.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 1.31% or 16.65 to $1256.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.59% or 0.72 to hit $44.55 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 1.29% or 0.60 to trade at $45.76 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.16% to 1.0893, while USD/JPY rose 1.17% to 106.91.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.13% at 98.79.
