Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 2.29%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.86%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 0.08% or 0.09 points to trade at 115.13 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) fell 0.24% or 0.14 points to end at 57.82 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was down 0.77% or 1.10 points to 141.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 4.06% or 4.10 points to trade at 96.88 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.88% or 6.50 points to end at 160.86 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) shed 3.58% or 4.51 points to 121.46.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which rose 2.49% to 288.43, American Electric Power Company Inc (NASDAQ:AEP) which was up 1.92% to settle at 93.64 and Consolidated Edison Inc (NYSE:ED) which gained 1.41% to close at 82.75.
The worst performers were Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL) which was down 9.65% to 58.26 in late trade, Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which lost 9.45% to settle at 83.31 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 8.69% to 14.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lianluo Smart Ltd (NASDAQ:LLIT) which rose 37.04% to 4.4500, Muscle Maker Inc (NASDAQ:GRIL) which was up 33.99% to settle at 2.05 and Mid-Con Energy Partners LP (NASDAQ:MCEP) which gained 25.00% to close at 2.6000.
The worst performers were Biosig Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:BSGM) which was down 39.84% to 3.02 in late trade, Aileron Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALRN) which lost 26.32% to settle at 1.4000 and BiondVax Pharmaceuticals Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:BVXV) which was down 25.58% to 3.87 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2610 to 338 and 45 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2304 fell and 478 advanced, while 36 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 17.82% to 32.46 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.04% or 0.85 to $1904.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 3.16% or 1.26 to hit $38.59 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $40.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1810, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 104.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 93.058.
