Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Technology, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.78%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.82%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.44% or 0.74 points to trade at 168.86 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.27% or 0.32 points to end at 120.25 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.18% or 0.08 points to 43.93 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 5.27% or 11.88 points to trade at 213.72 in late trade. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) declined 3.81% or 3.34 points to end at 84.27 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 3.36% or 5.22 points to 150.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Colgate-Palmolive Company (NYSE:CL) which rose 5.74% to 75.69, Extra Space Storage Inc (NYSE:EXR) which was up 4.85% to settle at 75.27 and Brown Forman (NYSE:BFb) which gained 3.61% to close at 52.28.
The worst performers were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 6.96% to 27.00 in late trade, Citizens Financial Group Inc (NYSE:CFG) which lost 6.77% to settle at 34.57 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 6.64% to 127.72 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Syndax Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:SNDX) which rose 44.62% to 13.58, Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which was up 25.08% to settle at 3.9400 and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc (NASDAQ:RRGB) which gained 23.10% to close at 71.40.
The worst performers were bebe stores inc (NASDAQ:BEBE) which was down 25.81% to 3.8800 in late trade, Galectin Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:GALT) which lost 16.91% to settle at 2.260 and Oncobiologics Inc (NASDAQ:ONS) which was down 16.84% to 1.58 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2496 to 729 and 23 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2220 fell and 356 advanced, while 56 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 44.04% to 15.34.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.90% or 23.49 to $1259.89 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.70% or 0.34 to hit $49.00 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.97% or 0.50 to trade at $52.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.69% to 1.1159, while USD/JPY fell 1.87% to 110.99.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.74% at 97.37.
