Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.47% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.66%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.75%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which fell 0.14% or 0.06 points to trade at 44.24 at the close. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) fell 0.26% or 0.12 points to end at 46.58 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was down 0.83% or 0.28 points to 33.45 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.46% or 3.09 points to trade at 122.60 in late trade. General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) declined 2.19% or 0.58 points to end at 25.89 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 2.09% or 1.62 points to 75.93.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which rose 1.17% to 77.05, Kimco Realty Corporation (NYSE:KIM) which was up 0.68% to settle at 23.84 and Health Care REIT Inc (NYSE:HCN) which gained 0.59% to close at 68.70.
The worst performers were Delphi Automotive plc (NYSE:DLPH) which was down 6.91% to 78.23 in late trade, Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which lost 6.59% to settle at 74.68 and Wynn Resorts Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN) which was down 6.48% to 104.14 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Global-Tech Advanced Innovations Inc (NASDAQ:GAI) which rose 16.08% to 3.40, Siebert Financial Corp (NASDAQ:SIEB) which was up 14.00% to settle at 1.710 and Forward Industries Inc (NASDAQ:FORD) which gained 13.69% to close at 0.739.
The worst performers were Yulong Eco-Materials Ltd (NASDAQ:YECO) which was down 26.16% to 3.98 in late trade, Wave Systems Corp (NASDAQ:WAVX) which lost 24.44% to settle at 0.340 and Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was down 20.56% to 2.280 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2742 to 351 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2355 fell and 441 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 21.63% to 19.57 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.43% or 5.00 to $1157.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.08% or 0.56 to hit $51.77 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.63% or 0.36 to trade at $57.21 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.57% to 1.1076, while USD/JPY fell 1.50% to 120.72.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.52% at 96.38.
