Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.29% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.35%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.44%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which fell 0.01% or 0.01 points to trade at 68.71 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.60% or 0.62 points to end at 103.74 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 0.56% or 0.53 points to 95.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 5.22% or 2.82 points to trade at 51.17 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.91% or 2.10 points to end at 70.02 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.76% or 1.15 points to 40.53.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 12.57% to 32.95, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 4.79% to settle at 101.52 and Baker Hughes Incorporated (NYSE:BHI) which gained 4.33% to close at 47.74.
The worst performers were PEPCO Holdings Inc (NYSE:POM) which was down 16.44% to 22.52 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 8.77% to settle at 6.03 and Navient Cor (NASDAQ:NAVI) which was down 7.81% to 12.04 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were 6D Global Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SIXD) which rose 177.42% to 3.44, Authentidate Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ADAT) which was up 137.70% to settle at 0.290 and Hanwha Q Cells Co Ltd (NASDAQ:HQCL) which gained 32.91% to close at 11.005.
The worst performers were Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was down 47.62% to 0.55 in late trade, Liquid Hlgs (NASDAQ:LIQD) which lost 20.72% to settle at 0.075 and Daktronics Inc (NASDAQ:DAKT) which was down 20.27% to 8.81 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1561 to 913; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1347 fell and 1232 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.78% to 36.35.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 1.20% or 13.80 to $1139.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.61% or 0.61 to hit $38.85 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 0.47% or 0.20 to trade at $42.89 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.99% to 1.1504, while USD/JPY rose 0.45% to 118.94.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.72% at 94.06.
