Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.17%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.92%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.11% or 6.07 points to trade at 293.80 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.68% or 4.82 points to end at 292.47 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.45% or 2.02 points to 141.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which lost 5.07% or 4.87 points to trade at 91.25 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 4.56% or 2.07 points to end at 43.29 and Raytheon Technologies Corp (NYSE:RTX) shed 4.55% or 3.09 points to 64.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which rose 12.98% to 191.25, Nielsen Holdings PLC (NYSE:NLSN) which was up 5.52% to settle at 14.73 and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) which gained 5.42% to close at 204.71.
The worst performers were Tapestry Inc (NYSE:TPR) which was down 12.73% to 14.88 in late trade, Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which lost 12.19% to settle at 26.36 and Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which was down 11.18% to 41.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Exela Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:XELA) which rose 59.12% to 0.3550, Cesca Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:THMO) which was up 58.05% to settle at 11.49 and Midatech Pharma PLC ADR (NASDAQ:MTP) which gained 55.26% to close at 2.9500.
The worst performers were Second Sight Medical Products (NASDAQ:EYES) which was down 36.67% to 1.33 in late trade, Verona Pharma PLC ADR (NASDAQ:VRNA) which lost 28.26% to settle at 4.24 and Taronis Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:TRNX) which was down 23.73% to 0.195 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2171 to 715 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1982 fell and 683 advanced, while 54 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 9.35% to 34.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.21% or 20.70 to $1692.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 26.96% or 4.06 to hit $19.12 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.15% or 0.04 to trade at $26.71 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.03% to 1.0952, while USD/JPY rose 0.01% to 107.19.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.60% at 99.050.
